Chapter 10.

“HOW? HOW the fuck did they get in here?”

“Where is she?”

“What happened? How is this possible?”

Everyone’s voices were a wild tornado swirling around Sloane’s ears, and he hadn’t been able to move himself away from the empty crib. He was stuck there, staring down at a forgotten bottle and rumpled blankets. The watchman spell he and Loch had placed on Pandora was broken, so he knew this was not an accidental portal.

His daughter, his baby, was gone because someone had taken her.

“Someone portaled in here,” Merrick said. “The trail is faint, but—”

“Let’s go! Now!” Sloane tore himself away, and he held out his hands to track the portal.

Loch was faster, and he grabbed Sloane’s arm. “Hold on!”

The room vanished in a quick snap, and they were standing in the garage of a body shop. It was empty, closed, and Sloane could smell something burning.

“Pandora!” he screamed, hurrying toward the office. All the bay doors were shut, he didn’t sense any portals in here, and there was nowhere else to go.

Again, Loch was quicker, and he pushed the office door open with a wave of tentacles. He was practically feral, tearing into the room with a roar and looking all around. “Where is she?”

“I don’t know!” Sloane threw up his hands in a desperate search for another portal they could follow. The longer it took to find, the more difficult it would be to locate. He could see papers on top of the desk were scorched, and he could smell burned plastic wafting from a chair that was still smoldering. He felt certain the damage was from Pandora, but he didn’t hear or see any sign of her.

Or any damn portal.

“Loch.” Sloane’s voice cracked. “I can’t….”

“Here!” Loch looped his arm with Sloane’s. “Hold on, my love!”

Again the world around them shifted, over and over, as Loch frantically tried to follow the series of portals to find Pandora. They went through a grocery store bathroom, a deli walk-in freezer, parking lots and back alleys, but soon there was nothing to track.

Out of breath and wheezing, Sloane stumbled against the wall of the parking deck they’d ended up in. “No… this can’t be….”

Loch stalked back and forth, his tentacles out and flailing angrily. “I can’t find another portal. I can’t….”

Sloane put up his hands for the most powerful perception spell he could muster, but he didn’t see anything either. “Shit! Shit, shit, shit.”

Loch was trembling, and he let out an inhuman roar that made the entire parking deck shudder and the cement beneath his feet crack.

It was all Sloane could do not to fall into despair, and he put his hand on Loch’s shoulder. “We’ll find her. She’s our daughter, and we can find her anywhere, right? You’ve always found me when I needed you.”

Loch took a deep breath and nodded. “Yes. And so we shall.”

“Let’s go back home.” Sloane’s chest was tight. “I want to know who it was and how the fuck they got into our damn house.”

Loch held Sloane tight, smothering a soft, pained growl into his hair.
